History of Sturgeon Bay Lighthouse, Wisconsin
Lighthouse Service engineers designed an experimental tower for the Sturgeon Bay Lighthouse, completed in 1899. Held erect by latticework buttresses, it proved unequal to the strong winds howling in off Lake Michigan and lasted only a few years into the new century. A new, ninety-eight-foot steel-cylinder tower replaced it in 1903. The station’s third-order Fresnel lens remains in operation.
